HOA Solar Panel Policy

Policies

Policy governing homeowner installation of solar panels, including placement, aesthetics, and approval requirements.

About this template

Solar panel installations are increasingly common, but they raise aesthetic and structural concerns for HOAs. Many states have laws limiting an HOA's ability to prohibit solar panels entirely, so the board's authority typically focuses on placement, visibility, and installation standards. This template balances homeowner renewable energy goals with community aesthetic standards and includes a clear approval process.

What's included
  • General policy statement on solar panel installations
  • Placement restrictions (e.g., rear-facing roofs only)
  • Aesthetic standards (panel color, frame finish, skirt requirements)
  • Structural and electrical code compliance requirements
  • Removal and roof repair obligations
  • Approval process and timeline
When to use this template

Adopt this policy before the first solar installation request arrives. Review your state law — some states (e.g., California, Florida, Texas) limit HOA authority to restrict solar panels.
